The Troll in behind the scenes footage.

The Troll is a humanoid Monster kept in the Facility. It is not listed on the Whiteboard, nor is it seen during the System Purge.

Physical Description and Attributes[]

The Troll, as his name implies, is a short monster-like creature originating from mythology and folklore legends. They are usually elderly, ugly beings who are tricksters and are generally unpleasant to encounter. Here, this troll is similar. He is about 3.5 feet tall and has green skin. His head is larger than an average human's; he has a massive jaw, mouth and nose. On the top of his head are two small horns. Its ears are long and pointed, similar to an elf's. The Troll wears raggedy clothing; a green shirt and black pants. Its feet or boots/shoes are large and boxy, making the Troll almost 'hobble' around when it walks. For its weapon, he carries a stick or staff, about the same height of himself. The origins of the Troll and his behavior are unknown, as he is not seen much at all during the film. Generally, trolls from mythology possess some magical ability to a degree, so we can assume this troll might as well.

It is unknown what item summons the Troll to the cabin. In myth, trolls were said to turn to stone when exposed to daylight, so one possibility would be a be a stone statue of a troll.

Appearances[]

The Troll is not seen during the Purge sequence. However, he can be seen in his cube cell briefly when Gary Sitterson and Daniel Truman are searching for Dana and Marty on the CCTV cameras. There he is seen standing idly awaiting his release.

The Troll is also seen in behind the scenes footage of the film.

Inspiration[]

Trolls are German and Scandinavian folkloric creatures with many origins in many countries. In some myths, they are related to the Jotuns (giants) of Norse myth, but are mostly credited with the earth, such as mining and living in caves. In terms of film, the creature may be a reference to Troll and its sequels. They are also featured in the 2010 Norwegian horror-comedy Trollhunter, although the trolls in that film are far larger, being the size of giants.
