Patience Buckner

Anna Patience Buckner is the youngest member and only daughter of the Zombie Redneck Torture Family. However, judging by her diary entries, she may have been the least savage and aggressive out of the family, having been scorned by her Father for 'lacking faith'. She was one of the most seen Monsters in the film and even made an appearance during the System Purge after she and her family were summoned to the Cabin. She was portrayed by Jodelle Ferland.

Physical Description and Attributes

Patience is a very short young woman. Judging by her height and overall small build, it can be assumed she may be a preteen or a teenager. Because she and her family are living corpses, her skin has rotted and most of her body has undergone the stages of decomposition. Her hair is long, dark brown and is fashioned in two braids that extend down to her chest. Her eyes have faded to a milky, white color. She is barefoot and wears a ragged, white dress that has frilly accents. What makes Patience unique in physical appearance compared to the rest of her family is that her left arm has been hacked off (and eaten) by her family. When she and her family were summoned to the Cabin, her weapon of choice was a hatchet.

Appearances

Patience Buckner and her family were the Monsters that were summoned to kill Dana, Marty, Curt, Jules and Holden at the Cabin, after Dana reads the Latin inscription from her diary. Patience, unlike the rest of her family, spends a majority of the time she has been summoned roaming about the grounds of the Cabin. It could be assumed that she either isn't as intelligent as the rest of her family (after death), or that her less sadistic nature makes hunting for the teenagers not as important.

In a later scene when Curt escapes the ambush from Father Buckner, Mother Buckner, Matthew and Judah Buckner, Patience was seen slowly and quietly approaching an unsuspecting Marty from behind. However, before she can reach him, Curt notices Patience when the two men are running inside and knocks her down. The rest of her family returns to the Cabin and attempts to make their way inside by smashing windows and the front door. It is unknown if or how Patience attempted to force her way into the Cabin. After the deaths of Curt and Holden, Dana makes her way back to the Cabin but is found and attacked by Matthew Buckner. Marty appears and saves Dana and the two retreat towards the Cabin. Patience can be seen approaching the two as Marty explains he discovered the cube that the Facility used to send the Buckner Family to the Cabin, but Marty spots her and he and Dana climb into the elevator and escape.

The next appearance of Patience Buckner is during the System Purge. After all the Monsters had been released into the Facility, Patience was the only one remaining- walking slowly out of her cube into the elevator corridor slowly and looking around. Later, when Dana and Marty are in the underground area of the Facility where the Ancient Ones are kept, Patience appears during the scuffle between the Director and Marty. Dana had just been attacked and severely injured by the Werewolf, so Patience ignores her and approaches the Director instead. She plunges the blade of her hatchet into the skull of the Director, which kills her instantly. However, her hatchet becomes stuck lodged into the Director's skull, and Patience lacked the strength to pull it out. Marty took advantage of the moment and kicks Patience, who drags the Director down with her, into the pit where the Ancient Ones lay below. It can be assumed Patience was killed from this and is not seen in the film again.

“Today we felled the old birch tree out back. I was sorrowed to see it go, as Judah and I had sat up in its branches so many summers…”

“Father was cross with me and said I lacked true faith. He did not give me my dose and he turned his eyes from me at supper. I wish I could prove my devotion as Judah and Matthew proved on those travelers…”

“Mama screamed most of the night. I prayed that she might find faith but she only stopped when papa cut her belly and stuffed the coals in.”

“Judah told me in my dream that Matthew took him to the Dark Room so I know he is killed. Matthew’s faith is too great; even Father does not cross him or speak of Judah. I want to understand the glory of the pain like Matthew, but cutting the flesh makes him have a husband’s bulge and I do not get like that.”

“I have found it. In daddy’s oldest books, that I will burn before I go, is the way of the family. For no one truly dies who understands the Great Pain.”

“I can hear Matthew in the Dark Room, working upon father’s jaw. My good arm is hacked up and et so I hope this will be readable, that a believer will come and speak this to our spirits. Then we will be restored, our love will be unending, and the Great Pain will return.”
